The #1 California Film Festival for High School Students — In Our 23rd Year!

What is Westflix?

Footage from Westflix 2024 - shot and edited by Ellie Wang ‘24

Westflix is a celebration of the best short films produced by teens throughout California, curated and organized by students and faculty at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, Los Angeles.

The program of student short films are showcased in an evening red carpet screening and awards event at a theater in Los Angeles - followed by a day of filmmaking workshops with industry professionals at Harvard-Westlake School. Previous venues include ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, the TCL Chinese Theater, the historic Million Dollar Theater in downtown LA, the David Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and the Paramount Theater at Paramount Pictures Studios.

Now in its 23nd year, Westflix (formerly the Harvard-Westlake Film Festival) has come a long way since its start. Founded in 2004 by Harvard-Westlake alumna Elizabeth Yale ’04 with guidance from her teachers Cheri Gaulke and Ted Walch, the first festival showcased the films in Harvard-Westlake’s Rugby Theater with alum Jake Gyllenhaal ‘98 as its speaker. The festival continues to expand each year under new student leadership and faculty advisors Reb L Limerick, Whitney Lasker, and Brannon Rockwell-Charland Cook.

Every year our event is headlined by a well-known speaker who is interviewed by our student leaders in front of the whole crowd. Past speakers include David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Mindy Kaling, Jordan Peele, Tom Hanks, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jamie Lee Curtis ‘76 AND MORE!!!
